More than just normal worrying, anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive and persistent worrying that is difficult to control, causing significant distress or impairment in everyday function for six months or more. Patients often experience physical complaints, such as fatigue and muscular tension, difficulty thinking, and disturbed sleep patterns. They can be apprehensive and irritable.
Anxiety occurs in up to 18% of the population, making it the most common mental disorder, Several types exist: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety, separation anxiety, agoraphobia (fear of being in a place from which it is hard to escape), and specific phobias (e.g., flying, heights). Onset tends to be gradual. Women develop anxiety disorder twice as often as men. While patients may eventually recover over several years, half of patients develop relapse over their lives.
Treatments for anxiety disorder include cognitive-behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques, and prescribed medications, such as benzodiazepines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). While such therapies may work for some, only 37% of the patients actually receive treatment. Other problems with medicines include slow onset of action and multiple side effects. One-third to one-half of patients obtain no significant benefit.
Ketamine has been shown to decrease the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social disorder anxiety, and agorophobia in patients resistant to other forms of treatment. The often began within one hour and lasted up to 7 days. Further evidence of ketamine's effect was seen its dose response effect: the greater the dose, the greater the benefit. These encouraging findings offer new hope that ketamine can improve the lives of those suffering from anxiety disorder.
We believe that mental health is a right and should be available to all. Our IV ketamine treatment for depression starts at $425 for a 1-2 hour, highly personalized session. It is a longer period than that at most other centers, but one we found produces a more robust and long-lasting effect.
Ketamine is not a substitute for accepted treatments from a qualified professional mental health provider. If you or your loved one is interested in ketamine as a supplement or alternative to traditional therapy, please give us a call for a free consultation.
