Find Lasting Relief with Ketamine Therapy

If you’ve tried multiple medications and therapies without finding relief, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans struggle with treatment-resistant mental health conditions and chronic pain that don’t respond to conventional approaches. Ketamine therapy offers a different path forward, one that works through unique mechanisms in your brain to provide rapid relief when other treatments have failed.

At Catalyst Health & Wellness, we’ve helped countless Houston residents break free from the grip of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and debilitating pain. Our ketamine therapy combines expert medical care with a whole-person approach that considers your mind, body, and spirit. With three locations across Houston and hours that fit your schedule, we’re here to help you reclaim your life.

What is Ketamine Therapy?

Ketamine has been used safely as an FDA-approved anesthetic for over 50 years. More recently, researchers discovered something remarkable: at lower doses, ketamine rapidly alleviates symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain, often within hours of the first treatment.

Unlike traditional antidepressants that work on serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine, ketamine targets the glutamate system in your brain. It acts on NMDA receptors to promote neuroplasticity, your brain’s ability to form new neural connections. Think of it as helping your brain “rewire” itself, breaking free from the stuck patterns that keep you trapped in depression, anxiety, or pain.

This mechanism explains why ketamine works so differently than conventional treatments. While traditional antidepressants can take weeks or months to show results (if they work at all), many patients experience noticeable improvement within hours or days of their first ketamine session. For those who’ve waited years for relief, this rapid action can be life-changing.

Research consistently shows powerful results:

Approximately 70% of patients with treatment-resistant depression respond to ketamine therapy

Symptom improvement often begins within hours rather than weeks

Ketamine helps repair and strengthen neural connections damaged by chronic stress, depression, and trauma

Effects can last weeks or months with proper maintenance treatment

Your Ketamine Therapy Journey at Catalyst Health & Wellness

We've designed every step of your experience to be comfortable, supportive, and focused on your unique needs. Here's what you can expect when you choose Catalyst for ketamine therapy in Houston.

Your journey begins with a no-cost, confidential phone consultation. This isn’t a sales pitch but a genuine conversation where we explore whether ketamine therapy is right for you.

During your consultation, you’ll:

  • Ask all your questions about ketamine therapy
  • Share your treatment history and current challenges
  • Learn what ketamine therapy involves
  • Get to know our team in a pressure-free environment
  • Receive honest guidance on whether this treatment fits your needs

There’s absolutely no charge and no obligation to continue.

If you decide to move forward, we’ll ask you to complete a medical history form. We want to understand you as a whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Communication with your current healthcare provider can be helpful, though it’s not always required. This preparation helps us personalize your treatment from the very start.

Preparation is simple:

  • Avoid eating for 6 hours before your appointment
  • Only small amounts of clear liquids 2 hours before
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

When you arrive:

  • We’ll review any last-minute questions
  • Check your vital signs
  • Start your IV with expert care from Dr. Ho

Dr. Ho uses the smallest IVs possible, and as an anesthesiologist and former pediatrician, he’s highly skilled at making IV placement comfortable. We can apply numbing medication if you’d like, and we have ultrasound equipment available to minimize attempts if needed.

You’ll settle into a soft, reclinable chair in our private treatment room. We dim the lights and create a calm, peaceful environment.

Your comfort matters:

  • Noise-cancelling headphones available
  • Relaxing music
  • Lightproof eye mask
  • Warm blanket
  • Adjustable lighting

Treatment duration:

  • Mood disorders: 40 minutes treatment + 20 minutes recovery
  • Chronic pain: 4 hours treatment + 2 hours recovery

The extended protocol for chronic pain allows us to address the complex pain pathways involved in conditions like fibromyalgia, migraines, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Throughout your session, we’ll monitor your vital signs at regular intervals. Either Dr. Ho or another member of our medical team will be in the room with you or right outside the door, checking on you frequently. Many patients feel anxious before their first treatment, which is completely normal. However, by the end of that first session, most people find the experience safe, relaxing, and even rejuvenating.

After your treatment ends, you’ll rest in our comfortable recovery area until your head is clear and you feel close to your normal self.

Important aftercare instructions:

  • You cannot drive yourself home (arrange transportation in advance)
  • Stay in the company of a responsible adult when possible
  • Avoid important decisions, vigorous activity, or operating heavy machinery
  • We’ll call you later to make sure everything is going well. In the doses we administer at Catalyst Health & Wellness, serious complications are rare. However, we’re always available if you have questions or concerns.

Some people respond remarkably to ketamine therapy after just one treatment. For others, it takes several sessions to achieve the full benefit.

Our typical protocol:

  • Initial series: 6 sessions over 2-3 weeks for mood disorders
  • Dose adjustments if needed for optimal response
  • Personalized maintenance schedule based on your results
  • Some patients need treatments every few weeks, others monthly
  • Continuous monitoring and adjustment to match your needs

Since everyone’s condition is unique, everyone’s treatment requirements will be different as well. We personalize your care to make sure your treatments match your needs perfectly.

The Science Behind Ketamine for Mental Health

Research published in the journal Science demonstrated that ketamine rapidly reverses the synaptic deficits caused by chronic stress. In animal models, a single dose of ketamine increased the number and function of synaptic connections in the prefrontal cortex (a brain region critical for mood regulation) within just 24 hours.

For PTSD specifically, studies from Yale and Mount Sinai have shown that ketamine reduces symptoms by modifying how the brain processes traumatic memories. It appears to help “reconsolidate” fear memories, making them less emotionally overwhelming. A randomized controlled trial found that 67% of PTSD patients who received repeated ketamine infusions experienced significant improvement in their symptoms.

Key research findings:

  • Ketamine promotes rapid synapse formation in mood-regulating brain regions
  • Effects often begin within hours, not weeks like traditional antidepressants
  • Helps “rewire” dysfunctional neural pathways in depression, anxiety, and PTSD
  • May represent the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades

Commonly Asked Questions

Get Help Now

How quickly does ketamine therapy work?

Many patients notice improvements within hours of their first treatment, though some people need a few sessions before experiencing the full benefit. This rapid action is one of ketamine’s most remarkable qualities, especially compared to traditional antidepressants that can take 4 to 8 weeks to work.

Is ketamine therapy safe?

Yes, when administered by trained medical professionals in a controlled setting. Ketamine has been used safely as an FDA-approved anesthetic for over 50 years. Dr. Ho’s expertise as an anesthesiologist ensures the highest safety standards. We monitor your vital signs throughout treatment, and serious complications are rare.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients receive an initial series of six treatments over two to three weeks. After that, you’ll likely need maintenance treatments to sustain your improvements. The frequency varies based on individual response. Some people return every few weeks, while others maintain their benefits with monthly treatments. We’ll work with you to find the schedule that keeps you feeling your best.

What does ketamine therapy feel like?

Experiences vary from person to person. Many patients describe feeling relaxed, peaceful, or slightly disconnected from their surroundings. Some people have visual or sensory experiences, while others simply feel calm. These effects are temporary and subside as the ketamine wears off. Most patients find the experience pleasant and therapeutic.

Can I drive after a ketamine session?

No, you cannot drive yourself home after ketamine treatment. You’ll need to arrange transportation. By the time you leave our facility, you’ll feel much clearer, but for your safety, you should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or make important decisions for the rest of the day.

How long do the effects last?

This varies considerably between individuals. Some people maintain their improvement for weeks or even months after their initial series. Others need more frequent maintenance treatments. During your follow-up appointments, we’ll assess how you’re responding and adjust your maintenance schedule accordingly.

Can I continue my current medications?

In most cases, yes. Ketamine typically works well alongside other psychiatric medications. However, we’ll review your complete medication list during your consultation to ensure there are no contraindications. Never stop taking prescribed medications without consulting your prescribing physician.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No, you don’t need a referral to begin ketamine therapy at Catalyst Health & Wellness. However, communication with your current healthcare providers can be helpful, and we encourage coordination of care whenever possible.
