FAQ: Common Questions About Ketamine Treatment Answered

Ketamine Treatment

Share

If you’ve been researching ketamine therapy in Houston, chances are you’ve come across a lot of conflicting information. One article calls it a miracle cure. Another paints it as a risky party drug. Somewhere in between sits the truth, and you deserve straightforward answers before making any decision about your mental health or chronic pain care. At Catalyst Health & Wellness, we’ve sat across from hundreds of patients who arrived with the same handful of questions, and we’ve found that clear information is often the bridge between hesitation and healing. This ketamine FAQ tackles the questions we hear most often, from how treatment actually feels to what happens after your first session ends. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have a much clearer picture of whether this path makes sense for you.

What Exactly Is Ketamine Therapy, and How Does It Work?

Ketamine isn’t new. Doctors have used it as an anesthetic for over fifty years, and it sits on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines. What’s new is how we use it. At much smaller doses than surgical anesthesia, ketamine triggers a different response in the brain entirely.

Here’s the simple version. Traditional antidepressants target serotonin, which can take six to eight weeks to show any meaningful change. Ketamine works on a different neurotransmitter system called glutamate, which helps your brain form new connections between neurons. Think of it like rerouting traffic around a permanently jammed intersection. The relief many patients feel within hours or days, rather than months, comes from this rapid neuroplastic effect.

Catalyst offers several delivery methods including IV ketamine, IM ketamine, and Spravato (the FDA-approved nasal spray version called esketamine). Each has its place, and Dr. Ho will walk you through which one fits your situation best during your free consultation.

Is Ketamine Treatment Safe?

This is usually the first question, and it’s the right one to ask. The short answer is yes, when administered properly by trained medical professionals in a clinical setting. Dr. Ho is a board-certified anesthesiologist and former pediatrician with extensive experience managing exactly this type of medication.

What does “administered properly” look like in practice? You’ll have a thorough medical history review before your first session. We monitor your vital signs throughout treatment. Either Dr. Ho or another medical team member stays nearby the entire time. Emergency protocols and equipment are ready if needed, though serious complications at the doses we use are rare.

That said, ketamine isn’t right for everyone. People with uncontrolled high blood pressure, certain heart conditions, active psychosis, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding generally shouldn’t receive ketamine therapy. Your initial consultation includes a careful screening so we can be honest with you about whether this treatment fits your medical picture.

What Conditions Can Ketamine Treat?

You might be surprised at how broad ketamine’s potential reaches. Research and clinical experience support its use for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, OCD, bipolar depression, suicidal ideation, and several chronic pain conditions including fibromyalgia, migraines, and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

The common thread? Most of these conditions involve dysregulated brain circuits that haven’t responded well to first-line treatments. According to Harvard Health, ketamine has become an important option for severe depression that hasn’t improved with several other therapies, including in patients experiencing suicidal thoughts.

We also treat adolescent depression in carefully selected cases, and offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with Houston Healing Collective for patients who want to combine the neurobiological effects of ketamine with deeper therapeutic work.

What Does a Treatment Session Actually Feel Like?

This is where curiosity meets nervousness for most people. Let’s demystify it.

You’ll arrive having fasted for six hours (small amounts of clear liquids up to two hours before are fine). Wear something comfortable. We’ll check your vitals, start an IV with the smallest possible needle, and get you settled into a reclining chair in a private treatment room. Lights go down. You can choose a warm blanket, noise-cancelling headphones, music, or an eye mask.

For mood disorders, the infusion runs about 40 minutes with another 20 minutes of recovery time. Chronic pain protocols are longer, around four hours of treatment plus two hours of recovery, because the pain pathways we’re addressing are more complex.

During the session itself, most people describe a floating or dreamlike sensation. Some experience mild perceptual shifts. A few report meaningful emotional insights. These effects fade quickly once treatment ends. By the time you leave, you’ll feel close to your normal self, though you absolutely cannot drive yourself home that day.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

For mood disorders, we typically recommend a starting series of six sessions spread across two to three weeks. This loading protocol gives ketamine the best chance to produce sustained results. Some patients respond beautifully after just one or two sessions; others need the full six before they notice meaningful change.

After the initial series, maintenance varies widely. Some patients do well with a single booster every few months. Others benefit from monthly sessions. We adjust based on how you respond, because no two patients have identical needs.

For chronic pain, protocols often look different given the longer infusion times, and we’ll build a personalized plan during your consultation.

Does Insurance Cover Ketamine Treatment?

Coverage depends on which treatment you receive. Spravato, being FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression, is covered by most major insurance plans (though prior authorization is usually required and the process can take time). IV and IM ketamine for psychiatric conditions are considered off-label uses, so insurance coverage is far less common, and most patients pay out of pocket.

Our team helps verify your benefits and explain costs upfront. We’d rather have an honest conversation about affordability than have you discover surprises later.

What Should I Look For in a Ketamine Clinic?

Not all ketamine providers operate at the same standard. The differences matter for your safety and your results. A few things worth asking about:

  1. Medical oversight: Is treatment administered or directly supervised by a board-certified physician with anesthesia experience? Continuous vital sign monitoring should be non-negotiable.
  2. Treatment setting: Are you receiving care in a proper medical environment with emergency equipment available, rather than a casual office space?
  3. Comprehensive evaluation: Does the clinic require thorough medical and psychiatric screening before starting treatment, or do they fast-track everyone through?

Catalyst meets all of these standards. We also coordinate with your existing mental health providers when appropriate, because ketamine works best as part of a broader treatment approach rather than a standalone fix.

When Will I Start to Feel Better?

Honest answer: it varies. Some patients notice mood improvement within hours of their first session. Others feel the shift gradually across the initial six-session series. A smaller group doesn’t respond meaningfully and may need to consider other options like TMS therapy or Spravato instead.

What we can tell you is that ketamine generally works much faster than traditional antidepressants when it works at all. The slower curve associated with SSRIs and SNRIs simply doesn’t apply here.
